Savannah celebrates one year of being smoke free

Savannah has been smoke free for one year. When the New Year turned to 2011, people were no longer able to smoke inside businesses or within 10 feet from the entrance outside.

The law also eliminated outdoor smoking seating for restaurants, unless the outside seating is at least 50 percent of the indoor seating. It is the same for private clubs and organizations. After a year operating under the new restrictions, some businesses are saying the law really has not had an impact on business.

“The year has actually been great, no decline in sales or anything like that. It is December now and it is 65 degrees, people can go outside and have a cigarette if they want,” said Gregory Laska, Molly McPherson’s Manager.

A draft law to make Chatham County smoke free is expected to be reviewed by County Commission on Jan. 13.
